Out‑of‑Boundary Attendance for French Immersion
Grades 2-6: No Attendance Boundaries for French Immersion
For Grades 2-6, French Immersion does not have fixed attendance boundaries.
If a student is not admitted to their Designated (Home) School for French immersion, they may accept a placement at another school with available space.
- Accepting a spot at another school does not affect your position on other waitlists.
- Efforts will continue to place the student at the highest-priority school if space becomes available
- Waitlists remain open until the 20th instructional day of the school year.
Key Points for Parents, Families and Caregivers of Grades 2 to 6 students:
- Siblings: While it is still possible for siblings to be placed in the same program or school, it is no longer automatic.
- Transportation: Busing is not provided for students attending out‑of‑boundary schools. Parents, families and caregivers must arrange their own transportation.
- Child Care: Before and After School programs are available at all schools offering French immersion, but they require a separate registration.
- Returning to Designated School: If French immersion is available at your Designated (Home) School, your child may return there for Grade 3.
Grades 7-8: Attendance Boundaries for French Immersion
For Grades 7-8, beginning in the 2026-27 school year, French Immersion will introduce attendance boundaries. Students will be assigned to a Designated French Immersion School based on their home address.
If parents, families or caregivers choose to attend a different Grade 7-8 French Immersion school that is not their designated school, this is considered out-of-boundary attendance.
Key Points for Parents, Families and Caregivers of Grades 7 to 8 students:
- School Assignment: Students are assigned to a designated Grade 7-8 French Immersion school based on where they live.
- Transportation:
- Busing may be provided to the designated French Immersion school, based on address eligibility.
- Transportation will not be provided for students attending out-of-boundary schools.
- Program Access: Placement at out-of-boundary schools depends on space and program availability.
Helpful Definitions
- Designated School: The school assigned to your child based on:
- Primary Home Address (previously called “Home School”).
- Approved Out-of-Boundary Request.
- Placement through programming, such as French immersion.
Designated School Students may continue at their Designated School without reapplying, unless their Primary Home Address changes.
- Out‑of‑Boundary School: Any school other than your child’s Designated School. Attendance requires an approved out‑of‑boundary request, and/or an Out-of-Boundary Acknowledgement letter on file at the school.
- Primary Home Address: The address provided by parents/guardians that determines the Designated School. In joint custody situations, parents/guardians must decide together in line with their custodial agreement. Alternative addresses (e.g., child care provider or family member) do not qualify a student to attend a school as a Designated School Student.
- Sibling: Children who share one or more parents or guardians.
