Recently, a beautiful example of inquiry based learning came to life in a kindergarten class at Riverside Public School.

While role playing in the dramatic play area, that was transformed into a ‘store,’ a student decided that all the money children spent in the store would be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. From there, some students decided to have a pretend fundraiser to help support people with cancer. A number of class discussions took place that focused on what it means to do a fundraiser and how the class could make a real difference. These discussions prompted one student to suggest the class make things ‘real’ – and that’s how the K4 Kindergarten class became involved in a week long, self-directed fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Each day of the week the class collected different coins – nickels on Monday, dimes on Tuesday, quarters on Wednesday, loonies on Thursday, and toonies on Friday – they even collected some bills!

We are so pleased to announce that the class raised $290! A special thank you to the two little girls who also set up stands in their respective neighbourhoods to sell rice krispie squares and lemonade to raise more money.

The teamwork to help others in need is touching! Way to go, K4 students!
