STEP IN – Weekly Walking Program

Is student well-being a part of your school improvement plan? Is traffic congestion around your school getting out of control? Do you want to earn bonus Eco-School points?

Take action by introducing STEP IN – Weekly Walking Program at your school and improve daily physical activity goals by increasing the number of students walking to and from school. The STEP IN program is a collaborative effort between Region of Waterloo Public Health and the Active and Safe Routes to School Committee (ASRTS) which includes representatives from the school boards, Public Health, local municipalities, and other community partners.

By registering, your school is committing to:

  • Identifying a STEP IN program champion
  • Promoting walking to and from school at least once per week throughout the school year (weekly walk to school days)
  • Tracking your progress through annual data collection (classroom hands-up survey)

By registering, you will receive the following support from Public Health:

  • Tips to start the STEP IN weekly walking program
  • Timely and regular communication with the school’s identified program champion(s)
  • Tracking tools to monitor progress and successes
  • Promotional products to encourage walking including posters, frequent walker cards, etc.
  • Monthly e-mails providing ideas for walking event launches and weekly walking day activities, school newsletter/website inserts, infographics, sample tweets, and PA announcements
  • Three themed challenges to recognize your school’s success and win prizes (annually)

Let’s get students walking by participating in the STEP IN – Weekly Walking Program!

Sincerely,

Gretchen Sangster RN, Region of Waterloo Public Health, Healthy Living
