The Waterloo Region District School Board welcomes refugee families into our schools.
We are committed to offering a safe, and inclusive place for your child to learn and grow. There are a wide variety of programs available, and supports in place to make your transition to school as smooth as possible. We look forward to meeting you and your family at your new school.
All students in Junior Kindergarten (JK) through Grade 12 are required to register at a school.
Elementary JK-Grade 8 (children born in 2002-2011)
Secondary Grades 9-12 (children born in 1998-2001)
All secondary students will register at the WRDSB Welcome Centre. Please contact the Welcome Centre to arrange a specific time for registration. The staff at the Welcome Centre will let you know which secondary school you will be attending.
Our School Supports
Each school has an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher who will help connect your child and family to supports within the school or the community. They may work directly with your child in a small group or assist the classroom teacher.
Classroom teachers share the responsibility for supporting English language learners in their goal of achieving language proficiency and in their continued success in learning.
School Settlement Workers help newcomer students and their families integrate into Canadian society and the education system by providing information, referral, orientation, advocacy and interpretation services.
