Description of the Award

Mr. Arthur White was a well-known personality in the City of Galt and was Mayor for a number of years. He was also a Member of Parliament for this riding.

This Scholarship Award is from a fund bequeathed by Mr. White, for this purpose.  The following quote is part of the section of his will, relating to this fund:

“To establish a scholarship fund of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) to be known as the Arthur White Scholarship the income from which shall be paid annually to the high school student (male or female) in the City of Cambridge who is adjudged to be the best athlete with the highest academic standing. The Trustees for this scholarship fund shall be the Treasurer and the City Clerk of the City of Cambridge and the adjudicators shall be elected representatives from the City of Cambridge on the Waterloo County Board of Education or any other Regional Board of Education which may replace it in the future. It is my intention that students attending both public high schools and separate high schools should qualify for consideration of this scholarship.”

Mr. White was a very active supporter of local sports organizations and a fund, derived from public donations, was raised in his honour. This fund is known as the Art White Sports Bursary Fund and it should not be confused with the Arthur White Scholarship Fund from which this award is made.

Cambridge student must be adjudged to be the best athlete with the highest academic standing.
