Roles and Responsibilities

Chairperson of the Board

The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees is elected by the other trustees. The Chair has no more or less power than any other trustee, but does have more responsibility.

The Chairperson of the Board:

  • Advises the Director and the Board of Trustees
  • Facilitates public meetings of the Board of Trustees
  • Along with the Director, is a spokesperson for the Board
  • Represents the Board at community functions
  • Reinforces the decisions of the Board, no matter what his/her professional feelings or beliefs

Secretary of the Board

The Secretary of the Board (who is also the Director of Education):

  • Announces Board meetings and provides other Board correspondence
  • Tracks Board motions
  • Works with the Chair to establish the annual plan
  • Reports to the Ministry of Education as required

Trustees

Trustees are:

  • Elected for four-year terms
  • Expected to use the available information and their own judgement to make decisions that are in the best interests of public education

Trustees have a dual role:

  • As an ombudsperson, they help steer individuals experiencing difficulty through the system
  • As a Board, trustees establish the mission, set policies, determine the yearly budget and hire and evaluate senior staff.
