On Monday, February 18, Waterloo Region District School Board staff became aware of a number of inappropriate and disturbing social media posts of a racially motivated nature, allegedly posted by two WRDSB secondary students. Staff have been in contact with the Waterloo Regional Police Service, as well as the families of those allegedly involved, and are investigating this incident thoroughly.

Waterloo Region District School Board values inclusive schools, where all students feel safe and supported. Offensive and inappropriate social media posts and behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated and are unacceptable. At this time, it has been recommended that the students involved stay at home indefinitely while police are investigating. Waterloo Region District School Board staff are working to identify next steps and potential disciplinary processes under Safe Schools Legislation and our associated policies and procedures.

We are disappointed by the alleged conduct of these students. We are proud of our student community for bringing this issue forward and their refusal to allow it to continue. As a school district, we have made equity and inclusion an area of focus for our schools and communities. This behaviour does not reflect the values and attitudes of our students, schools, staff or communities.
