Stand back, take a second, and tell me, what do you see? Or how do you feel?
They say “a picture is worth a thousand words,” so Grade 8 students from Sunnyside Public School put their thoughts to canvas, and expressed their views on important teen and world issues through art.
At the 8th annual “Will Not Be Silent” art show, displayed at the Stanley Park Community Association, students had the opportunity to show their perspective on hot topics such as teen pregnancy, self-esteem or body image, war, social media, racism, etc. through any style of art that would help them get their point across, either abstractly or directly.
“This art show is important because it shows the view of our young students and how they think about big issues in life. Teenagers are more grown up then we think, and this project allows them to express themselves in a visual way. I am always so impressed,” says Chantry Makinen, the Grade 8 Art teacher who organizes the event each year.
The exhibit featured 90 original works, a sample display from the more than 250 pieces, with the remainder of the art work exhibited throughout Sunnyside PS.
It was a great event with many people stopping by to enjoy the creativity.
