The WRDSB aims to create an anti-oppressive, inclusive, and respectful culture where everyone feels valued and welcomed.

To do this, processes of exclusion will continue to be examined and reconciled, and together through staff and community collaboration, gaps mitigated, strengths bolstered, and collective knowledge increased.

Here are the policies and practices related to anti-oppression, equity, and human rights, developed in ongoing collaboration and support from community and interfaith organizations in Waterloo Region:

Initiatives and Celebrations

Pride Month

June is nationally recognized as Pride Month in Canada. Many institutions and organizations, including our Nation’s Parliament, fly the pride flag as a celebration of diversity. During the month of June, all Waterloo Region District School Board locations will fly the Pride flag alongside the Canadian flag

Black History Month

While the contributions from members of the African, Caribbean and Black community should be celebrated throughout the year, Black History Month is a special time to recognize and remember all the ways that African, Caribbean and Black Canadians have contributed to Canada’s history and culture. At the WRDSB, Black History Month is a time to learn more about these Canadian stories and about the diversity of African, Caribbean and Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of our country.

Black Brilliance

Black Brilliance is a strategy to support African, Caribbean, and Black Identifying Students at the WRDSB. It was created in response to a deepened understanding of how anti-Black racism is having a negative impact on the achievement and well-being of students. This strategy seeks to identify, communicate, address, and eliminate the discrimination, and marginalization that African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) students experience in WRDSB schools.

Menstrual Equity

Menstrual equity is about ensuring that those who menstruate have access to period products, as well as dispelling the stigma that is associated with menstruation. Providing free period products at all schools and sites is one step that the WRDSB has taken toward menstrual equity. This allows students and staff to attend school or work physically and emotionally, with fewer barriers.
