What is CASL?

CASL stands for Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation, which came into effect on July 1, 2014. It affects how the WRDSB communicates.

CASL prohibits sending any sort of commercial electronic message via email or text message unless the recipient provides specific informed consent to receive these types of messages and the message contains certain pieces of prescribed information. A message is considered commercial if the intent of the end result of the message is to have money exchange hands (e.g. pizza days, spiritwear sales, field trips, fun fairs). Messages that do not have some sort of commercial transaction involved are exempt from the legislation. So, for example, Synrevoice attendance check emails would be exempt but Synrevoice messages about a fundraising campaign would not be exempt.

FAQs

Can a teacher/school presume consent if I just say it’s OK with me?
No. You must opt in yourself to receive email messages. This process will be available in September.

How long is consent valid?
Consent is valid until it is revoked by clicking on the unsubscribe link which must appear on every email.

How quickly does the unsubscribe have to take effect?
Action on every unsubscribe request must be within 10 days or less. There cannot be a charge to individuals to unsubscribe.

Do school councils need to comply with the Act?
Yes, if they contact parents electronically for any commercial activity.

Can the school share the consenting parent list with school council?
No. It is recommended that school councils maintain their own list of parents. Since parents can unsubscribe at any time, the list provided to your school council may not be up to date.

I clicked the link, but only got a webpage
Clicking the big green box is all you needed to do, your preference has been recorded. We’ve altered our process to make this more clear to you.

I tried to login and couldn’t
The login link on our website is for staff only and unrelated to the CASL opt-in email. We have changed our opt-in process to reduce any confusion, and in a future website revision, will be moving our login area for staff to the bottom of the page.

How do I confirm my permission options?
You can always go to the “Edit your subscription” link at the bottom of any email from the WRDSB to see your settings, change your information, or unsubscribe.

Does this apply to all email communications from the WRDSB, including my child’s school?
Yes. If you opt-out, you will not receive email from the WRDSB or the school.

But I want to get email about my child, not commercial email!
This is our first phase. As we roll-out our communications strategy, we will be able to provide options for which types of email you’d like to receive.

I only want to get information about school events…
You can subscribe to the school website to get notifications from that website about school events, news, and more if they have subscriptions available. If your school has School Day, you can also sign up for School Day to get notifications. If you have questions about the services your school provides, please contact your school office in September.

Does this sign me up for School Day?
No, School Day is a different service, your consent provided in this email is for the WRDSB only to contact you. If you have questions about this, please contact your school office in September. School Day is already CASL-compliant and run independently. Not all schools are currently using School Day.

Does this sign me up for news from my school website?
No, your school website’s email subscription is managed by your school itself. If you have questions about this, please contact your school office in September.

Will my child’s information be compromised?
No, by agreeing to receive email from us, your choice is stored in a secure database. We will be using this information to update the email field in our student information system through an automated process.

If I opt out, does that mean I am no longer listed as a contact?
No! All it means is that we will not contact you by email and will remove your email from our student information system. You will still be listed as a contact for your child(ren) and all your other information will remain untouched.

I signed up to continue to receive email. Will this one consent apply to all my children?
Yes it will, as long as the email on record for each of your children is the same. If you had different emails for different children, then you would have received multiple requests to sign up. As long as you consented to each of the email you received, you will remain on our list.

I changed my mind, I want to unsubscribe!
At the bottom of any email from the WRDSB is an Unsubscribe link.
