What is a school council?

School council is a place for parents, caregivers, and other members of school communities to get involved and share their views about education.

Who makes the school council?

The school council is an elected committee of:

  • Parents and other caregivers
  • Staff
  • student representatives
  • appointed community members
  • the principal

Why is a school council important?

The school council advises the principal on various issues and activities such as:

  • student achievement
  • curriculum goals and priorities
  • school budget 
  • school safety
  • renovation plans
  • after-school activities

What do school council members do?

  • Discuss issues related to student success and the best interests of all students
  • Participate in setting school priorities for improving student achievement
  • Promote meaningful parent/caregiver and community involvement 
  • Communicate school council activities with the community 
  • Help organize events and activities at school
  • Review school and board policies and procedures

How often does a school council meet?

School councils are required to meet at least four times per year.
