OYAP Magnet Programs

How it works?

All OYAP Magnet programs consist of four elements:

  • A co-operative education work experience
  • Specialized in-school theory training
  • Specialized in-school practical training
  • Professional classroom environment

Benefits of OYAP Magnet Programs:

  • Practical skills are taught in the classroom, offering students one-on-one training with a teacher and hands-on experience
  • Many OYAP programs teach students skills required in their level one apprentice training programs
  • Students have the opportunity to work with materials and equipment used by industry
  • Co-op allows students to network with employers
  • Magnet programs offer students transferrable skills required to enter a variety of technological careers
  • Students may advance into a Dual Credit Program
  • Students may register as an apprentice, while in high school

Pre-requisites

Students wanting to apply to participate in an OYAP Magnet Program must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a full-time student of the Waterloo Region District School Board
  • Be entering grade 11, 12 or in their 5th year
  • Be 16 years of age before beginning first co-op placement
  • Have successfully completed all grade 9 and 10 credits
  • Displayed a sincere interest in the program desired
  • Demonstrated good attendance and work ethic
