Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) values the involvement of parents, caregivers and community members in providing a quality education for students.

Research shows that engaging parents and caregivers in their children’s education has a positive impact on student learning and creates a sense of community at the school. Working together as partners we can help to develop caring and contributing citizens by encouraging academic success and by improving conditions to support overall well-being.

There are many ways for parents and community members to get involved in local education.

School Councils

A school council is made of parents and caregivers, the school principal, school staff and members of the school community. School councils give advice to the principal and WRDSB on school improvement and ways of encouraging student achievement.

School councils work with staff and the community to help set school priorities and to increase learning opportunities through hands-on involvement. Activities often include organizing fundraising and planning extra-curricular events for the school community.

Waterloo Region Assembly of Public School Councils (WRAPSC)

WRAPSC is a parent-run committee that brings together school council representatives from across Waterloo Region to share ideas and work together to improve the effectiveness of school councils.

WRAPSC provides a place for school board staff and trustees to share information and consult with school councils on current issues and future plans.

Every school council is encouraged to appoint a member to attend WRAPSC meetings to provide information to and from their school community. WRAPSC has a cooperative and supportive relationship with PIC.

PIC collaborates with WRDSB staff to support, encourage and enhance parent engagement in children’s education, in order to improve student achievement and well-being. It is a Ministry of Education mandated group for all Ontario school boards that consists of parents, caregivers, community representatives, the director of education, a school board trustee and school staff members. The co-chairs of the committee are parent representatives. PIC has a supportive relationship with WRAPSC.
