• Official Opening of $4.9M Addition at Wilson Avene PS

     The Waterloo Region District School Board is please to announce the official opening of a major two storey 12 classroom addition at Wilson Avenue Public School.

    Special Guests, parents, students and staff  gathered in the schoolyard of the school on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 for a short ceremony and a ribbon cutting. An open house and community barbeque followed to ceremony.

  • Revised Opening Date for Millen Woods Public School

    The opening date for the new North-East Waterloo elementary school has been revised. Millen Woods Public School was originally scheduled to open September 2011. The revised opening date for the new school has been changed to January 2011.

    Superintendent of Education Mark Schinkel commented, “The reality of a construction-friendly winter and many unanticipated positive factors has resulted in the adjustment of the projected opening date. We are very pleased that construction will be finished to allow for students and staff to begin learning in their new school.”

  • Waterloo CI Receives Grant for Solar Project

    Waterloo Collegiate Institute has received a grant from State Farm Insurance's Youth Advisory Board. The grant, worth $58,135 will help the school install solar panels on the roof of the school. This student lead initiative, in conjunction with Reduce the Juice, will result in measurable emission reductions at the school while teaching students about renewable energy and its benefits at the same time. Students have formed a club called SPOT (Solar Panel Operations Team) that will take the lead during the planning and installation phase.

  • Bluevale CI Cruises to Win Electric Car Competition

    Congratulations to Bluevale CI's electric car team for coming in first place at Orangeville's annual electric car race. Bluevale placed first and second in the 12 volt category as well as first and second in the 24 volt category.

    The objective of the race is to travel in a single seat vehicle as far as possible in one hour using only the power from a car battery. The team designs and builds the cars with a special focus on making the cars light, fast and efficient. Preparations, rehearsing pit stops and checking and rechecking every bolt was the key to Bluevale's success.

  • Country Hills PS Wins With Ecokids.com

    Congratulations to a grade 4 class at Country Hills PS on winning a scavenger hunt on the website EcoKids.com. Students had to answer a series of questions on a variety of topics including First Nations people, waste minimization, renewable energy and Earth Day. Students won bookmarks, stickers, a pizza party as well as a signed certificate from the President of Earth Day Canada for their efforts.

  • Keatsway PS Raises $10,000 for Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation

    Students at Keatway Public School jumped rope and showed off their skipping skills on their way to raising $10 000 for the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation on a cool and breezy morning on May 11th. Teacher, Carrie Bentz, who organized the yearly event wishes to thank the many parent volunteers that assisted her with the running of this fundraiser. Well-done, Cardinals!

  • Pioneer Park Hockey Club Awarded $10,000 from RBC Hockey Leader Program

    Steve Sanderson, a custodian at Pioneer Park PS, is this year's RBC Local Hockey Leader. Steve is one of 13 volunteers (one for each region in Canada) that will be honoured at a ceremony at the Hockey Hall of Fame on June 16,2010.

  • CHCI Student Member of Minister's Advisory Council

    Harley Kaufmann-Sacrey, a student at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute is a member of this year's Minister's Student Advisory Council. The Council is a group of 60 students that represent all areas of the education system (English, French, Public and Catholic) from all over the province. The Council meets a few times a year and shares ideas and advice with the Minister of Education on how to make the education system in Ontario the best is can be. Harley was selected from over 400 applications to be a member of the Council- congratulations Harley!

  • Official Opening of $3.2M Addition at Wellesley PS

    The official opening of a major addition of nine classrooms at Wellesley Public School took place on May 18, 2010.

    Special guests, parents, students and staff gathered in the gym of the school at 7:00 PM for a short opening ceremony complete with a ribbon cutting. An open house and tour of the new addition followed.

    The school was originally opened to students in September 1966 and had an addition added to the school in 2002. Wellesley PS currently serves over 600 junior kindergarten to grade 8 students and is located at 1059 Queen’s Bush Road in Wellesley.

  • Stewart Avenue PS Wins Grand Prize

    Waterloo Regional Police Service has announced that the Junior WAYVE (Working Against Violence Everywhere) team at Stewart Avenue Public School in Cambridge are the winners of the overall best submission in a contest for kindergarten to grade 8 students. The children were asked to share their creative ideas about how to “help make our community safer by encouraging smart choices.”

    Ninety-three group and individual submissions were received from a total of 158 youth.
