After many years of requests by the community, Empire Public School in Waterloo will finally receive $4.7M in upgrades to their gym and library, as well as five Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) classrooms in anticipation of FDK in September.
The construction begins in the next few weeks and is expected to be complete for September 2013. Other improvements are planned, including increasing parking areas to accommodate current and additional staff for FDK, site re-grading, storm water management, and planting almost double the number of existing trees to replace the 50-year old Norway Maples. Along with over 200 perennials, shrubs, and ornimental grasses, the following 39 trees are expected to be planted in the site:
- Karpick Maple (3) botanical name: acer rubrum “karpick”
- Endowment Maple (3) botanical name: acer saccharum “endowment”
- Princeton Sentry Maidenhair Tree (4) botanical name: ginkgo biloba “princeton sentry”
- Fat Albert Spruce (14) botanical name: picea pungens “fat albert”
- Bur Oak (2) botanical name: quercus macrocarpa
- Redmond Basswood (5) botanical name: tilia americana “redmond”
- Valley Forge American Elm (8) botanical name: ulmus americana ‘valley forge”

Empire PS is a JK to grade 6 school with over 540 students this school year. FDK will start at the school in September 2013.
