History Teacher Wins 2009 Governor General's Award
We are very pleased and proud to announce that Brent Pavey, a History teacher at Waterloo Collegiate Institute, is one of only seven teachers from across Canada and two in Ontario who are recipients of the 2009 Governor General's Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History.

Back in November, students and staff at Waterloo CI had an e-waste collection day. There was a great turnout and they collected a truckload of e-waste and nearly $1500 in cash donations which will go toward the school’s EcoSchool projects.
WCI Community Service Project
Grade 11 Marketing students from WCI donated 20 Build-A-Bears to children in the Pediatric ward at Grand River Hospital. The students collected money and took time to build and personalize each bear at the Build-A-Bear workshop. Each bear also included a calendar, birth certificate and a colouring book. The bears were delivered on June 11, when students spent time reading and playing games with the children. Extra bears were donated to the hospital for future patients.
Ontario Technological Skills Competition 2008
The Ontario Technological Skills Competition held May 6, at RIM Park was a great success in the Waterloo District School Board in terms of participation and competition results. The Students that received a gold medal standing will be continuing on to the Canada Technologic Skills Competition 2008, in Calgary May 25 - 28 (with the exception of CAM, HST and Industrial Wiring categories).

Stephen Chou from Waterloo CI placed first in the annual Ontario Business Educators' Association Accounting Competition. The event, sponsored by the CMA and CGA, attracted over 900 accounting students from across the province.
WCI Envirothoners Take Top Spot
WCI's envirothoners took the top spot at the Grand River Regional Envirothon for the third year in a row. The team took first place in Aquatics and Forestry and placed in the top three in Soils and Wildlife. The team will advance to the finals in May where they will compete against teams from across the Province to represent Ontario at the Canon International Envirothon this summer.
Canadian Skills Competition 2008
The Waterloo Region DSB sent two competitors to the Canadian Skills Competition in Calgary. After they both placed first in Ontario, they nobly represented our school board and Ontario with a gold medal and a 4th place performance in their respective categories.
Congratulations to Andre Recnik (WCI) for his gold medal in IT PC Network Support, and to Derek Hurst (CHCI) for his 4th place finish in PC Office Applications.
Waterloo CI Student Researcher Wins Top National Prize
Daniel Burd a student at Waterloo CI won the top prize and high praise for his project at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. His research project, Plastic Not Fantastic, was selected the Best of Fair of the 450 competitors representing the best from all 100 of Canada’s regional science fairs.

Waterloo Collegiate Institute participated in the Educational Computing Organization of Ontario Regional Computer Science contest. Both WCI teams were successful and qualify to go on to the finals at York University.
Waterloo Wellington Science Fair Results
At the 35th Annual Waterloo Region and Wellington County Science and Engineering Fair, three Waterloo Region DSB students were chosen to represent the Region at the week-long Canada-Wide Science Fair to be held this year in Ottawa. The students are Jeff Graansma, a student at Forest Heights CI who competed in Engineering - Senior, Daniel Burg, a student at Waterloo CI, who competed in Biotechnology - Senior and Zach Elgood, a student at Courtland PS who completed in Physical Science - Junior.
