Transportation Review Reduces Walking Distances


At the February 22, 2010 Board meeting, trustees gave final approval to recommendations from a Board Transportation Review Committee that will result in shorter walking distances for Board students.

2009 Annual Report

The Waterloo Region District School Board has released the 2009 Annual Report. In accordance with the Education Act, the Director of Education must provide a report to the Ministry of Education each year. In Waterloo Region DSB, this report is shared with everyone in the Region by posting the report on the Board's website.

Waterloo Region DSB Launches Fundraising Campaign for Haiti Relief Work

The Waterloo Region District School Board has responded to disaster relief efforts for Haiti and has launched a Board-wide fundraising campaign. Students and staff in the School Board will conduct a campaign named “Help for Haiti – Because We Care” over the next few days. Since the Federal Government will match all donations raised before February 12, fundraising efforts will focus on a January 26 deadline.

Help for Haiti - Because We Care

The shocking events surrounding the earthquake in Haiti last Tuesday have stunned the world. The loss of life and devastation in such a poor country is overwhelming and tragic.

As a large educational system and community, we are affected in many ways. A number of our staff, students and community members know people affected directly or indirectly and have the desire to help alleviate some of the suffering experienced by those in Haiti. There are many lessons for our students that can be related to the earthquake: compassion for the survivors, the importance of initiative and social responsibility, relief efforts and finding ways to help. Many teachable moments are occurring in schools as a result.

Early Learning Kindergarten Program Introduced in Some Local Schools

The Waterloo Region District School Board has announced the elementary schools which have been approved by the Ministry of Education to implement the first phase of the all day every day, Early Learning Kindergarten Program for 4 and 5 year old children. The program will be phased in to all schools in the province over the next five years, beginning in September 2010.

Linda Fabi, Director of Education with the Waterloo Region DSB commented, “We welcome this program model as a positive addition to the existing outstanding kindergarten programs in our Board and throughout Ontario.

WRDSB Employees Selected as Olympic Torch Bearers

Kris Sangers, eLearning Secretary with the WRDSB, was selected as an Olympic Torch Bearer. Kris was selected through the application process with RBC to carry the torch through Woodstock on December 27, 2009.

Martha Deacon, Principal at Doon Public School, was also selected as a Torch Bearer. Martha carried the torch along King Street in Kitchener on December 27, 2009.

Waterloo Region DSB Censures City of Waterloo

At a Board meeting of the Waterloo Region District School Board held tonight, trustees reacted strongly to the news that the City of Waterloo had approved a Storm Water Management Tax on the Board.
