What are Education Development Charges?

Education Development Charges (EDC) are essentially levies on new construction to help pay for the cost to acquire and service school sites.

The province’s pupil accommodation funding model provides grants to school boards to cover the costs of constructing and furnishing new schools. School boards are responsible for the acquisition of school sites. Methods for boards to acquire new sites include leasing, joint venturing with other parties, Ministry financing, and EDCs.

EDCs may be imposed if an eligible board will need to acquire and service school sites to accommodate the students resulting from a new residential development.

For more information on EDCs, please visit our Planning Website.
