One of the most important roles for elected school board trustees is to provide overall direction for the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) by establishing its Mission, Vision and Values. Trustees also develop and approve the broader Strategic Direction for the Board which in turn focuses the work of the director and staff.

From the Strategic Direction, staff develop operational plans to move the WRDSB forward and trustees give direction for the budget that supports these plans. The establishment of the Strategic Plan is a consultative process that includes staff and stakeholders. The Strategic Plan is ultimately the responsibility of the Board of Trustees and they use this plan to hold the director of education accountable as staff work together to move the organization forward.

On Saturday, January 9, trustees and senior staff began the journey of developing a strategic plan that will guide the WRDSB for the next four years. As a first step, in what will be a broader consultation process, trustees and staff started exploring a collective vision for public education in the WRDSB and how best to support students, parents, families, staff and our community partners in creating futures full of potential for our young people.
