Students from Laurelwood Public School rushed through the library doors to support their school’s leadership group, P.E.E.R. (Peer-led Educating and Empowering Resource). The members of P.E.E.R. hosted their 3rd annual unlearn. Open House and invited students in Grade 5 – 8, staff and parents to participate.

This year’s theme was “Resilience to Failure” with hopes of helping Laurelwood PS students, staff and parents learn the importance of balance between school/work and play, and understand that it is okay to fail a test, not make the team, miss the shot, etc. The question the P.E.E.R leadership group asked everyone to think or write about was, ‘what does Laurelwood need to unlearn. about failure.’

Six activity stations were set up encouraging guests to think about their “support system” as well as learn some new calming strategies. Abhi, the founder of unlearn., was also on hand to explain the concept of his organization. Laurelwood’s School Resource Officer was also on-site to help families learn about local supports when students are feeling overwhelmed with the pressures of success!

We live in a world of intense pressure from everyone around us, even from ourselves, and learning that it is okay to make mistakes, and not get something right the first time, is an important life lesson.
