The month of October was “Focus on Manufacturing” month, and this theme gave Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) students a chance to explore various manufacturing jobs in our own region.

Several high school classes, including technology, career studies, and science, had the opportunity to tour 23 local manufacturing facilities as part of the WRDSB Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and Experiential Learning programs.

The official kick-off was October 2nd on Manufacturing Day (MFG Day), a North American wide event organized locally by the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington & Dufferin.  On MFG Day, students toured facilities including: Anchor Danly, Ontario Drive and Gear, Pride Signs, PWO Canada, TigerCat and Septimatech.  Between tours, our students stopped at the Conestoga College – Cambridge Campus for lunch and a manufacturing focused presentation.

Along with MFG Day host manufacturers, Kuntz Electroplating, ACL Steel, Gerdau, Ready Rivet & Fastener, Toyota Canada and Eldorado Plywood provided additional student tours throughout October, including a girls-only visit to Toyota. Our students had a blast!

These learning opportunities were made possible by our local companies opening their door and allowing our students to learn right from the experts – we thank you for your time and knowledge. In addition, we’d like to thank the OYAP and Experiential Learning programs of WRDSB for their support.
