The Bluevale Collegiate Institute (BCI) Electric Car team swept the three major awards at the 2015 University of Waterloo (UW) Electric Vehicle Challenge. The BCI team competed against a number of schools from the region and across the province to capture the three titles.

This was quite the amazing feat. The UW adjudicators were very impressed with all facets of the club and the students’ understanding and performance of the four vehicles they designed, built and raced, not only at UW but in Michigan as well.

The day started with the road course and the team winning the one-hour, 12 volt battery competition, despite a minor collision in the final few minutes of the race. In the afternoon, the team followed up with a victory in the 75-minute, 24 volt battery competition – but the real excitement was winning the Dennis Weishar Engineering Design Award, an engineering competition done in a panel form. The UW adjudicators questioned each electric car team about their vehicle design and operating features, and ultimately awarded BCI the the Dennis Weishar award for their unique and creative solutions to their design challenges.

Since the competition began in 2012, this is the first time ever one school has swept the three major awards, twice! In addition to their wins, their championship race car will be on display at the Canadian International Autoshow in February 2016.

The team would like to thank their sponsors and numerous staff and parent spectators who supported the team.

On behalf of the WRDSB, we’d like to extend our congratulations to this team on winning The TADA Cup – what an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations to Mr. Cox, Mr. Smith and the entire 22 member student team, Grade 9-12.
