The staff and students of William G. Davis Public School welcomed The En-Kata Choir from Tanzania, Africa. They performed their ‘Hope of the Maasai’ musical presentation, and shared songs and stories from the heart of their continent.

The school’s Global Issues Group (GIG), which is also their Me to We club, has done a monumental amount of work to bring this celebration of African culture to William G. Davis, as well as fundraise in order to assist with sending a Maasai to Teacher’s College in Tanzania. This event and all the preparation associated with it has been a great opportunity for students to engage in leadership.

The 36 enthusiastic, globally-aware students, under the direction of four staff members, have worked tirelessly to make this exciting event happen. From announcements, posters, a video, a well-organized fundraising campaign and planning a beautiful luncheon, teachers watched their students come together to contribute to hope and positive change at a global level.

The presentation featured songs written by the Maasai and was performed in both their native language of Maa and the official language of Swahili. It offered a look into the fascinating culture of the Maasai tribe in Tanzania and a chance to become part of the story of hope by helping their school expand. The En-Kata Choir has two CDs of the choir’s performances, a DVD of music videos, and a picture book showcasing one community of the Maasai tribe. These items as well as handmade crafts such as key chains and necklaces were available for purchase at the event. The main goal of the choir tour is to raise money to continue with the construction of the first Maasai-led elementary school in Orbili, Tanzania.

The GIG club of William G. Davis asked students to bring in a donation to support the construction of the school. Students were encouraged to earn the money they donated by helping their parents with extra chores around the house. The school’s hope was to raise enough funds to send a Maasai to Teacher’s College in Tanzania, which is about $1000 for the year and will ensure the Maasai children receive a quality education. As of today, the total amount raised surpassed the goal and is $1339.

This event has been a great way to show how our local awareness and action can have such a positive effect across the world. William G. Davis would like to thank you everyone involved for their support of this wonderful opportunity for cultural learning!
