September 24, 2014 Kitchener, ON: Today, the Education, Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released school board results for Grade 9 Academic and Applied Mathematics Assessments.

“The Waterloo Region District School Board’s Grade 9 Academic EQAO Mathematics results maintain a high success rate, with 83% of students achieving levels 3 and 4,” states Scott Miller Assistant (to) Superintendent – Learning Services. “The results show a 1 percentage point decrease from 2013, and as a board, our achievement level remains comparable to the province.”

“The Grade 9 Applied Mathematics EQAO results remain the same as in 2013 with 44% of students achieving levels 3 and 4. While these results continue to show steady improvement, having increased 4 percentage points over the last 5 years, Mathematics continues to be a priority within the Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement.”

Highlights of results:

Applied: Results for students taking the applied math assessment remain unchanged from 2013, with 44% achieving at levels 3 and 4.

  • 89% of students in applied math achieved a passing level (Levels 1 through 4), an increase of 4 percentage points from last year.

Academic: Results for academic math decreased one percentage point from 2013, with 83% of students achieving at levels 3 and 4.

  • 98% of students in academic math achieved a passing level (Levels 1 through 4).

Other Information:

  • Approximately 4300 Grade 9 Math students participated in the assessments.
  • In the WRDSB, 72% of grade 9 Math students are enrolled in Academic Math.
